Green Haus Community in East Dallas
24 homes with green design near the Santa Fe Trail in East Dallas, offering permanent supportive housing and temporary housing.

Responding to the need
For more than 25 years, Shared Housing Center has worked to break the cycle of homelessness for older adults, single parents with children, and people with special needs in Dallas County. By redesigning and reusing existing homes, our Homeshare and Group Residence programs have offered safe, caring, transitional and semi-permanent housing to people and families facing money problems, serious illness, or the loss of a job.
Continuing our mission
In the first decade of this century, the recession made a new homelessness crisis worse. The women we serve include veterans who have few resources, have been apart from their children for long periods, and quietly live with post-traumatic stress. We also help working people and families who hold two or three jobs, with few or no benefits, and still can’t afford decent housing.
Green Haus adds supportive, permanent housing that helps families and individuals move out of poverty, stay out, and build lives of self-sufficiency and responsibility.
Who it’s for
Green Haus offers a supportive home for single mothers who head their households, with their children. It also houses single women who are homeless and are 50 or older or living with a disability.
The community sits on about 1 acre, with four residential buildings and one shared community building for residents. It is all-green (LEED certified) and was designed to be efficient, comfortable, and affordable: a new model for rebuilding families and broken lives.
Designed to last
Green Haus has a low carbon footprint and keeps long-term upkeep costs down, with:
- Thirty-year architectural shingles
- Brick and stucco walls
- Rain catchers for watering, and native plants
- Erosion and sediment control
- Water- and energy-saving fixtures
- Healthy flooring and finishes
- ENERGY STAR appliances
A real neighborhood
Residents share:
- A community building with a computer lab and meeting space for learning and fun
- A playground with a gazebo nearby
- An outdoor grill and picnic tables
- A community garden for better nutrition and food awareness
The Santa Fe Hike and Bike Trail is close by, with plenty of room to exercise.
We broke ground with a blessing ceremony in 2014. Our offices moved to Green Haus in 2022.
Green Haus is a bold new step in breaking the cycle of homelessness. Responsible design! Responsible lives!
